Spain tops poll for illness on holiday.
Recent data provided by Bimuno Travelaid has revealed that Spain is the number one destination for
holiday illness.
In the late Nineties and early Noughties Spanish destinations particularly the Balearics became hotspots for large illness outbreaks. Hotels such the Auguamar and Alcudia Pins in Mallorca had outbreaks of illness with literally hundreds of people becoming ill from bugs such as
Salmonella food poisoning and the notorious swimming pool illness,
Cryptosporidium. Another culprit was the Torremolinos Beach Club in the Costa Del Sol.
It was thought that Spain had cleaned up its act as a holiday illness destination with hotels in Egypt and the Dominican Republic being the source of a lot of cases for illness. It now seems though that the Spanish mainland is a big culprit for causing sickness and diarrhoea on holiday.
If the Bimuno poll is right though, it seems that Spain is up there again, not only as a popular destination for holidaymakers seeking
Sun,
Sea and
Sangria, but for nasty holiday illness bugs as well.
A nauseating 32.2% of British travellers said they had been ill whilst staying around the Southern Spanish Coast with just 3% of people saying they were ill following a holiday to Thailand – maybe Brits should travel to the country formally known as Siam if they want to avoid being ill by just staying at home!
While Mallorca seems to have cleaned up its act with stringent health and safety regimes which make it easy for holiday makers to claim compensation for their illness, it appears that its big brother, the Iberian Peninsula has someway to go to prevent so many people being ill abroad. Following behind Spain for illness was Greece with 14.2 advising that they suffered illness with France, Egypt, Africa, Turkey all coming in with less than 10 per cent of people saying that they were ill following their trips there.
Surprisingly only 5.3% of people returning from India, famous for its
Delhi Belly, reported illness.
People that travel on Package Holidays can actually claim compensation for their illness if the can show that the hotel operators are at fault. The spread of infections such as E. coli, Salmonella and
Gastroenteritis can be reduced or prevented by hotels adopting proper hygiene procedures. If the hotel or tour operator is at fault you can potentially claim against your tour operator and you should contact a travel compensation lawyer or holiday illness solicitor who can advise you about your prospects of making a successful claim.
If you are ill on holiday and think that it is serious or lasts more than a few days, you should seek medical attention and consult your doctor when you get back to the UK. Make sure you keep evidence of your illness on holiday as you may need it when it comes to making a claim against the travel company.
