Bring Your Own Wine to Cruise

It's no secret that one of the largest expenses that can add up during a cruise is one's alcoholic drink tab. The dining is all inclusive, but those cocktails are not...so ShipOuts.com has some great hints when it comes to bringing wine on the cruise...

Many cruise lines have a standard rule allowing each 21 year old adult passenger (per cabin) one bottle of wine or champagne. Many times there is no size limit on the bottles. So at ShipOuts, we always go for our favorite wines in the largest available bottles. Wine is the best choice since it needs no mixes, can be re-corked, and generally will last longer than champagne. (Another idea is to pack your own wine bottle cork to keep your wine resealed and fresh). Once in your cabin and ready to partake in a nice glass of wine, call room service. Ask them to send you a corkscrew and several wine glasses for each person. Carnival's room service, for example, always provides a corkscrew with their logo, and it is yours to keep when you depart! So once your supplies arrive - set up your “bar area” and drink your wine whenever you like. Remember, requesting many glasses per person at a time will mean less calls to room service later asking for fresh ones.

Many cruise lines promote passengers to bring their wine to the dining hall to be opened by their server before the meal. Remember, if you take the wine bottle to dinner, you will be charged a mandatory “cork fee” which could range from $10 to $25 (plus) dollars. Instead, at ShipOuts, we like to pour a nice full glass of wine to carry right to our table at dinner. We have never had a hostess or server object to this practice. For all they know – we are bringing our wine from one of the many bars around the corner. We then enjoy our wine with our meal – minus the cork fee!

At ShipOuts, we also like to pour a glass in the room, walk out on deck to sip while we watch the sunset, or a port departure, or a moonlit night. Then there's always time for an in-room glass before a night out enjoying the ship's festivities. Of course the best idea might be to enjoy a cocktail together during a romantic night in the cabin!
